Water

I just came home from church where they showed this video and one of our pastors (Peg) shared about his experience in Ethiopia this past month. Awhile back on my blog I talked about how Mike and I were taking part in "Run for Water" in Abbotsford. Well, a couple people that are on the board of this organization go to our church and they just got to go and watch the money we raised bring clean water to this small village in Ethiopia. Tonight Peg showed pictures of his trip and I was brought to tears. This one eleven year old girl was thanking him and told him that because there is now fresh water right in her village she no longer has to walk all day long to get to clean water. Because of this she can now go to school! Who knew that bringing water also was bringing education. She then put her head down and the translator told Peg that she was very ashamed to tell him this next part. Peg encouraged her to tell him and she then said that now that I don't have to walk all day for water I no longer have to live in fear of getting raped. It turns out that there are some men who prey on the little girls that walk home late at night with the water. This little girl had been raped before and now she no longer has to walk alone late at night. Wow, water also means personal security.

So needless to say, I am inspired to be a part of the next Run for Water in Abbotsford which will be held on May 31st 2009. I urge all my family and friends that live near by to join as well. Proceeds will go directly to bringing water to another village in Ethiopia. We saw a picture of the potential village tonight and their water source was unbelievably bad.

Crazy to think that we could be pushing a stroller with our Ethiopian Canadian son this May! Or at least we better be!!!!

A phil'n'teds? They aren't bad for a quick walk, not too sure about a run.

It is crazy when you put that on how a basic right to clean water can also allow a young girl to receive another basic right- education, and an even more powerful and often abused right- personal security (freedom).

And if you don't have Samuel by May-- I can't even allow myself to go down that road ..

Wish they had a run for water in my neck of the woods. What a great cause.

that video made me choke up, and nothing was even said or... well... really anything to make me choke up. i just picture your sweet little boy in a place where they can't drink. and i just finished my microbiology class and learned about so many diseases (microbes) in the water of third world countries and my prof's direct quote was, "it's not America so we don't need to worry about that, it doesn't pertain to us..." and i thought, no damn it it actually freaking DOES pertain to us! and i wonder how anyone lives like that and i just kept thinking... he needs to come home to you! soon, so soon! maybe he'll get here on Caleb's birthday (May 9). love you guys. December 26th is not too far off now... how many more sleeps?

Em, thanks for posting this...it brings fresh perspective to us here in N. America that we are so fortunate. It must speak volumes to your heart to see pictures and hear stories of Ethiopia - the place where your SON is living!! If I was in Abby, I'd definitely do the run with you in May :)
